Spring climb of Lassen Peak Northwest Ridge to the 10,457' summit. This is an alpine mountaineering route and not the hiking trail.
This event is cross-posted on our Facebook and Meetup pages, as well as the Blue Falcon Hunters Hiking Page, so not all attendees will be listed in this particular listing.
To participate, PLEASE have experience with climbing in snow conditions using crampons and ice axe for self arrest. You will need mountaineering boots, crampons, alpine ice axe, gaiters, sunglasses and/or goggles, and a helmet. Snowshoes are highly recommended. The climb will be around 10 miles round trip, with 5,000' of elevation gain. Almost all of the climb will be on snow.
Please DO NOT register for this event if you do not have these items and experience using them.
IMPORTANT NOTE!!! There is a National Park entrance fee at the entrance station of $25 per vehicle. This is a good reason to carpool, but please pitch in a reasonable amount for gas and entrance fee if you choose to carpool.
We will be leaving from the Starbucks' parking lot in Rancho Cordova at 4am. Those interested can carpool with us, or meet us at the trailhead around 7:15 or 7:30am. Trailhead will be at the Northwest entrance at the Discovery Center by Manzanita Lake. IMPORTANT NOTE!!! There is a National Park entrance fee at the entrance station of $25 per vehicle. This is a good reason to carpool, but please pitch in a reasonable amount for gas and entrance fee if you choose to carpool.
IMPORTANT: For those driving ... Hwy 89 is still closed coming from the Hwy 36 side, so you MUST come in via Hwy 44 and then take Hwy 89 from the other side, to the Discovery Center.
You will read and sign the Adventures in Faith liability waiver, either at the Rancho Cordova starting point, or at the trailhead.
From Chaos Crags TH @ 5,847' we will head out the Chaos Crags trail. We will leave the trail shortly and stay on the left side of Manzanita Creek. We will bushwack, on snowshoes if necessary, the next 2.5 miles under the Chaos Crags. We will follow the creek right up to the base of the Northwest Ridge. Treeline is @7,500' elevation. Somewhere safe on the lower ridge we will break out the crampons, helmets, and ice axes.
Our return is on our route of ascent. Sunset is at 8:11 pm on this day so, barring thunderstorms, we should have plenty of time.
